Tips from Detroit-native Sam Spector, stylist to the stars

The very talented stylist to the stars and Detroit native Sam Spector will be on “The Nate Berkus Show” at 2 p.m. today on NBC to give creative fashion tips.

Spector, who graduated from University of Michigan before moving to New York City where he started as the fashion director of Out Magazine and later Esquire before becoming a celebrity stylist,  has been to Israel three times and attends high holiday services at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.

He will give advice to viewers and members of the live audience on what is popular right now in fashion and how to pair what you already have and love.

Today’s appearance is focused on how to use patterns. Read a few tips below and then tune into Local 4 at 2 p.m. to learn more.

How to use patterns:

  • Use complimentary colors in patterns, such as brown and blue.
  • Find an anchor pattern and mix with a neutral pattern, such as  tweed and small/thin strips.
  • Mix scales: larger and smaller patterns work; two small-scale patterns will look too busy.
