The many friends and family of Robert and the late Beverly Canvasser gathered recently at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital to celebrate Beverly and a new fund to make a difference for others.

The Beverly & Robert N. Canvasser Compassion Fund has recently been established by a donation from Canvasser in his wife’s memory.

Robert Canvasser has been an institution in West Bloomfield. His commitment to the hospital and community have included being a trustee on the Henry Ford Health System Northwest Region board in 1998, and for the hospital in 2009.

He wanted to leave an endowment at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital “for the staff, who make this such a special place,” he said.

The fund is already helping staff who need temporary assistance during a difficult time.

Stephanie Johnson of Detroit was a customer service representative when she “stumbled into the [human resources] office, looking for help.” She did not know about the fund, but was a single parent who had run out of resources.

“When I was told that my daughter and I would not be put out on the street, I burst into tears,” she says.

“I met royalty tonight,” she said to Mr. Canvasser. “That’s what your gift means to me.”

Canvasser said, “Henry Ford Hospital has saved my life more than once. Beverly always loved to help those around her. I want to return the compassion that so many others have showed our family.”
