Marc Jonna, co-owner of Plum Market, tasted more than 100 wines at the Kosher Wine and Food Show in New York last month.

“As the popularity of quality kosher wine continues to increase, the quality and variety of wines available to the kosher wine consumer are astounding,” he said.

Many of these wines come from Israel. “Israel is like the Napa Valley of kosher wines,” Jonna says. “People who don’t need kosher wine choose these wines because of their quality.”

Good kosher wine is also coming from California, Italy, Spain and France, he adds. “Plum Market has the largest selection of kosher wine in West Bloomfield year-round,” he says. “I got to bring a few wines back from the show, so come in for some ‘secret buys.’”

To assist with holiday shopping, Jonna put together a Kosher Wine Guide to share with the JN. “While truly a blessing, the tremendous choice can make for a somewhat overwhelming shopping experience,” he says.

Here are his top three picks in each price point.

“These are those special wines I would proudly serve any Master Sommelier,” he says.

  • 2013 CB Matar by Pelter, Galilee. “The cumulonimbus cloud is known for both its towering power and graceful appearance. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc from the Upper Galilee mirrors those characteristics,” he says.
    Plum Price: $54.97
  • kosher-_du-castel2013 Black Tulip Bordeaux Style Blend, Galilee. According to International Wine Review, “The Black Tulip is Tulip’s top-of-the-line bottle, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot sourced from the best barrels for each variety.”
    Plum Price: $59.97
  • 2012 Domaine Du Castel Grand Vin, Jerusalem-Haute Judee. Castel’s premium red wine: a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, made from their best grapes and aged 24 months in new French oak, according to Jonna.
    Plum Price: $59.97

$30-$50 WINES

“A tremendous amount of world-class kosher wine is being made in this category,” Jonna says.

  • 2013 Hagafen Pinot Noir, Napa Valley.(Mevushal) From the winery: “This bright lively Pinot jumps out of the glass with aromas of juicy cranberry and lush strawberry.”

  • kosher-_tulip-black-tulip-2013-r-262013 Petit Castel Red, Judean Hills. “The Petit Castel is lovely this year, in its subtle way,” Jonna says. “It is a blend of 53 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 36 percent Merlot with small bits of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.”
    Plum Price: $39.97
  • 2013 Domaine Du Castel Chardonnay, Jerusalem. “Still the best Israeli white I’ve ever tasted, by a very wide margin,” Jonna says. “Crisp, with the perfect balance of fruit and oak. Expensive, yes, but worth every penny.”

$16-$29.99 WINES

“This price range is actually the sweet spot for me,” Jonna says. “There are a number of wineries that maintain a tremendous level of quality without pushing prices out of the reach of most people.”
