Soup was on at Adat Shalom Synagogue in Southfield when 35 kids, in partnership with Jewish Family Service, Heart 2 Hart and Adat Shalom Teen Volunteer Corps, gathered to cook minestrone soup, make no-bake cookies, hand-tie fleece scarves and assemble more than 75 care bags for homeless individuals in Detroit. Participants also played Spent (, an online game that shows players what it’s like to live in poverty and how easily one can become homeless. Larry Oleinick from Heart 2 Hart was most appreciative of everyone’s efforts. “The soup was a big hit,” he said. “You warmed up a bunch of souls today.”
