The McCarty Team plans its third annual Animal Rescue Event and Garage Sale

Huntington Woods-based Realtors Dan and Patti McCarty, known as the McCarty Team, have more than just a passion for real estate. They have a passion for helping dogs find loving homes.

The couple’s passion for rescuing dogs began about five years ago, when their dog passed away. In the months following, they attended meet-and-greets with rescue mutts and ended up adopting three dogs — they were hooked!

Three years ago, Dan and Patti decided to start an animal rescue event out of their home in Huntington Woods during the city’s annual citywide garage sale. It’s turned into a widely anticipated, fun event to support their furry friends by donating the funds they raise to local animal shelters.

The McCarty Team’s third-annual Animal Rescue Event and Garage Sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 19, through Sunday, May 21. The couple is collecting donated items to sell — anything that can be sold at a garage sale. They’re even willing to pick things up.

“We purchased a minivan to help pick up items when people aren’t able to deliver them,” Dan said. “We start collecting items in April and warehousing them in our garage.”

At last year’s event, the McCartys raised $1,600 and donated the proceeds to the Royal Oak Animal Shelter. They are hoping to double that number this year and will be using a neighbor’s yard as well to expand their event.

Not only is this event part of a massive garage sale, a summertime favorite activity for so many, but it will also feature food and family activities including hot dogs, popcorn, a bake sale and lemonade stand, face painting, raffles and possibly a dunk tank.

Perhaps the most important part of this year’s event is that Dan and Patti have invited a few animal shelters to come out: Royal Oak Animal Shelter on Friday and Tigerlily Cat Rescue on Saturday.

“We hope to have a few live dogs and cats,” Dan said. “We have never had live pets before, only pictures. The police said it was OK.”

Dan and Patti’s desire to help animals in need does not stop with their annual rescue event. The couple is so passionate about these animals that after every closing in their real estate business, they donate to the animal rescue of their client’s choice. Furthermore, they help re-home local dogs and collect pet-related items year-round from neighbors and friends to deliver to those who need pet supplies.

Any garage sale items left over after the event will be donated to Team Tessa’s fundraiser in June. Tessa is a young girl with stage 4 neuroblastoma, and the McCarty’s help at this fundraising event in support of her.
