The Well & JN’s 36 Under 36: SAREY RUDEN
Sarey Ruden, 36, of Birmingham, is creator of Sareytales, which are the original designs and illustrations inspired by real text messages she has received during her online dating experiences. After years of working as a graphic designer and art director for agencies in New York and Detroit, Sarey decided to put her talents to work for a more personal cause.
Combining her passion for art and design with a portfolio of dating fiascos that would rival most, Sarey transforms the creepy, cruel and often anti-Semitic messages she receives on dating apps such as Plenty of Fish, OKCupid, Match, and yes even Jdate, into works of art.
What began as a fun little project of crafting clever designs from cruel words has turned into something much larger. Sareytales has since evolved into a platform which empowers other women to stand up to the online bullying, anti-Semitism and cyber-sexual harassment culture of online-dating. Sareytales is turning ugly into art, one text at a time.
Up Next? Sarey will be the featured artist in the “Two of Hearts” Exhibit at Las Laguna Gallery (laslagunagallery.com) in Laguna Beach, CA, from Feb. 1-24.
Sareytales artwork (prints, greeting cards, gift wrap, coasters and stickers) is available at etsy.com/shop/sareytales. Follow @sareytales to learn more.
