Hy Safran joined the Jewish Federation and United Jewish Foundation in 2015 and is responsible for the development of relationships with some of Greater Detroit’s most generous Jewish community members. Hy cultivates and deepens relationships with donors to grow Federation’s annual campaign and endowment, encouraging families to make meaningful philanthropic impacts and create for themselves a legacy to last generations.
Previously, he served as national constituency director to President Barack Obama and chief director of strategic affairs in the U.S. Senate. Hy serves on the boards of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Humble Design and has previously been a trustee or board member of the Jewish Community Relations Council, Jewish Theological Seminary Detroit Chapter, Jewish Federation NEXTGen Executive Committee, Oakland County Community Health Coalition, Anti-Defamation League Young Adult Division, JARC Young Leadership Division, etc. Hy graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University and magna cum laude from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He enjoys traveling, cooking, art and growing his dangerously extensive sock collection. He is also passionate about supporting local sports teams including the Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines.
Matched only by his commitment to family, strengthening the Jewish (and broader) community in transformative and meaningful ways is Hy’s focus and motivation. He hopes his enthusiasm for Jewish identity and caring for others at every stage of life is contagious. Hy is deeply humbled to be one of Jewish Detroit’s 36 Under 36 and is grateful to be a part of an historic and thriving Jewish community.
