Studying Abroad In Israel
In a screenshot shared by CAMERA on Campus, the Jewish News recently learned that the organization alleges that a University of Michigan professor refused to write a letter of recommendation for a student because she would be studying abroad in Israel.
When one student, Abigail, asked her professor for a letter of recommendation for her application to study abroad in Israel, professor John Cheney-Lippold of the American Culture department responded positively. However, after noticing that Abigail was applying to a program in Israel rather than another study abroad location offered by the university, this professor rescinded his offer, explaining that, due to his department’s belief in the BDS movement, he would not be able to write the student her recommendation letter.

Refusing to Write a Recommendation Letter
According to Jewish News reporter Stacy Gittleman on Facebook, “The letter [above] is an example of what happens when a campus provides an environment for the demonization of Israel. When criticism of Israel slips into a singling out and refusing to give a letter of recommendation to a student because she has chosen to study abroad in Israel, THAT is discrimination and anti-Semtism.”
