Dana Nessel Will Be Michigan’s Next Attorney General

Republican Michigan Attorney General candidate Tom Leonard conceded the race to Democrat Dana Nessel Wednesday morning, reports the Detroit News.

He said, “It is time to move forward and allow Michigan’s next attorney general to begin transitioning into this important role. Dana Nessel ran a smart campaign and earned the voters’ trust. I have offered her any help she may need getting acclimated to the department and beginning her term. I will always have a passion for serving alongside law enforcement and making our state safer and stronger for Michigan families, and I wish Dana the best as she assumes that mantle on our behalf.”

Nessel continued to hold a small but stable lead throughout the night with most Michigan precincts reporting. With more than 96 percent of precincts reporting, Nessel held a 48.49 percent to 46.77 percent advantage. Nessel, who is Jewish, will make history as Michigan’s first openly gay statewide office holder.

With Nessel’s apparent victory, it seems that women have swept the top of the ticket in Michigan. Democrats Gretchen Whitmer won the governor’s race; Jocelyn Benson won for secretary of state; Debbie Stabenow was re-elected to the U.S. Senate; and newcomers Haley Stevens and Elissa Slotkin flipped red districts blue on their way to the U.S. House of Representatives.
