How did you get started in interior design?
When I was at Wayne State University, I took courses in interior design and found it interesting. Once I graduated, I didn’t really do anything with my degree because I had kids. But my friends kept saying, “I need something over here… what do you think?”
When we moved into our current home, we decided that we need to do some things. My husband looked at me and said, “you can do it,” and well, I did it! I decided to take more courses and became a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). I continue to take courses to keep my accreditation.
What made you want to start Lois Haron Designs?
I have had my business for 35 years. Right from the beginning I decided I wanted to have my own business rather than have partners and belong to a firm. I wanted the flexibility of choosing the projects and products.
What is your favorite thing about interior design?
The fun of meeting new people, seeing what they want to do and solving their problems. I love every room I work on. I work from the floor to ceiling in kitchens, including cabinets, counter-tops, lighting, painting and window treatments — same with bathrooms and home offices.
I often go to client’s work offices and design that space and wind up helping some of their partners at the same time! I enjoy every room I work on — it’s always an interesting project to figure out how to make it look good.
Describe your style.
I am more contemporary-transitional rather than real traditional or country. I can do those, but sometimes it just takes me a little longer to figure out what’s right! I like the contemporary-transitional and mixing it with traditional.
What does your business stand for?
I have always said that it doesn’t have to cost a fortune, only look like it, and I truly believe that! I try for my clients — I ask them for a budget, and they will give me an idea. Most of the time they have no real idea what it is because they have never done something like this before. I can find things for them in all price ranges.
How are you different from other interior designers?
I am one of the few interior designers who designs and has things made exactly the way I want. That’s how I started out — I would design furniture and have my contractors make it.
I’ve been using the same people for a long time. Most of my contractors that I use have been around for 25 years. I know what they can do, and they know what I want, and we work together. If there is a problem, they talk to me. If I don’t like something or want to change something, I go to them. When they come to the home and see what I designed, they might offer advice to me, and I open my mind and tell them they are right! We work well together and most importantly, we work for the client.
Do you service all over Michigan?
Yes, I’m all over! I have even traveled to Ohio. I don’t have a specific radius — I cater to my clients.
