Maurie Perlman of Oak Park has been blowing shofar for years at local synagogues at the High Holidays — first for Rabbi Dr. Leo Y. Goldman’s Congregation Shaarey Shomayim, then at Congregation Beth Achim and now at Congregation Or Chadash in Oak Park. The shofar he uses is very long and handsomely curved, with a deep, pure tone. His parents bought the shofar in Israel for him as a present. Perlman, who has played trumpet since grade school, makes the blowing look easy.
