Fabulous Ferndale has been host to a number of new bars and restaurants popping up in the last year. The new kid on the block, Imperial, has been serving up tequila and some seriously delicious California-style street fare. They are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. – 2 a.m., with food service ending at midnight.

Imperial is the brainchild of owners Perry and Sharon LaVoisne, and old friends and music industry aficionados Jeff and Susanne King and Amir Daiza. They opened their doors in May at the location of the old Post Bar on the east side of Woodward just north of 9 Mile. Parking is metered on the street and in parking lots behind the business.

Birmingham has a Barrio

Barrio Tacos and Tequila repairs the dearth of respectable Mexican cuisine north of Vernor Hwy.

When it comes to Mexican and Latin food, most local options are of the (long gone, but sadly influential) Chi-Chi’s variety — where refried beans and Spanish rice are requisite sides with any meal. Of course, there’s always Mexican Town, which provides a little more authenticity, but surprisingly not much variety despite the number of restaurants there.

Last summer, the Dali Restaurant Group, hoping to mirror the success of its other Birmingham offerings, Chen Chow Brasserie and the Hamilton Room, threw a sombrero in the ring and opened Barrio Tacos and Tequila. The restaurant’s Mexican fare manages to be both streetwise and casual, yet obviously fussed over by Executive Chef Hammond Lawton.
